Important Concerns when Pricing a DJ
Probably
the worst way to choose a DJ is on price alone. Some
DJs are more expensive than others. Prices can range
from $100 to $2,000 for a 4 hour event. That's quite
a difference, and it would be very tempting to choose
the cheapest alternative. If that's all you can afford,
then you have no choice. But, consider the law of supply
and demand.
There is a reason
why some DJs charge more money than others. They are usually
worth it. More expensive DJs tend to be the more experienced
DJs. They can charge more because they have a lot of jobs,
and they have a good reputation. Generally, the DJs on
the low end of the price scale are new to the business,
and trying to get established. They could do a great job,
and might be worth a shot if your party is on the informal
side. There is probably more risk with a less experienced
person and less piece of mind for yourself.
The following are concerns that clients expressed about hiring a DJ who was nonprofessional, very cheap, or a friend:
- The DJ put on a one man show and took all the attention away from the bride & groom.
- Showed up late, left early or did not show at all.
- Did not have the music that was requested and had a limited selection.
- Had a substitute DJ (one you have never met) show up to DJ the wedding.
- Did not dress in formal tuxedo wear, showed up in jeans.
- Would not return phone calls and the DJ business line does not have a professional greeting.
- The equipment had very poor sound quality and the announcements were not understood.
- Played the music way too loud and would not adjust the volume on request.
- Did not make the announcements professionally or did not make them at all.
- Used vinyl records or CDs that skipped halfway through the first dance.
- Had a big sign with their company's name that looked like a freeway billboard.
- Did not work well with the photographer, videographer or coordinator.
- Brought some friends along and they were all drinking heavily.
- Would not take requests from family or friends.
- Was very disorganized and did not coordinate events.
- All of the DJ's literature received was very unprofessional.
